INTER-COUNTY SQUASH MATCH REPORT

Ladies 1st Team 20th-21st November 2004.

Match Report by Naomi Duthie (Capt)

The Team: Susie King, Louise Clark, Flavia Roberts, Naomi Duthie (Capt), Kate Russell and Amanda Norris.
Match 1:
Hants beat Devon 18-6
Flavia got the team off to a winning start against Devon with a comfortable victory over Zoe Wellicombe. Amanda soon added to the winning tally winning a long battle at number 5 winning 3/2. A well fought match for Kate playing at 4 after losing the first game 10/8, and coming back in third it wasn't to last and unfortunatly lost 3/1. Susie played some great squash at number one to overcome her opponent, a strong badminton player Betty Blair 3-1, and Louise polished off the victory in confident style winning 3/0 at number 2.
Match 2:
Hants beat Herts 20-0
It proved an interesting start for the other two teams in their first match with Herts only turning up with four players and then their number 1 came off injured after the first game. A quick look in the rule book brought about an interesting situation. Due to the nature upon which they came off they were according to the England Squash rules, the number 1 player was therefore not allowed to play again that weekend. After some discussion the organiser comfirmed the situation, Herts were now down to 3. With our second match being against Herts we were already up 2-0. With Susie, Louise and Flavia all making fairly quick work of their opponents everyone was soon back off court and heading back to the hotel after a 5-0 victory.
Match 3:
Hants beat Avon
Sunday brought about what would be the toughest match against Avon with both counties having won 2 ties.
Kate and Flavia got the team off to a good start with 3-0 victories over their opponents. The tables then turned with Hampshire losing the next two ties after fighting well we went down 3-0. We were now tied at 2-2 with a good performance by Louise against a much experienced opponent sealed the vicorty for Hampshire 3-2 and clear winners for the weekend.
and finally: A big thanks to everyone for playing and Bob Beatie for some great coaching before the intercounty weekend. We now all look forward to the second half where we will be battling for promotion back into the premier division. But for now back to training!!
Final Standings
Hampshire 59
Avon 39
Devon 19
Herts 13
