Youssef Ibrahim

Youssef Ibrahim (Egy)

Youssef is the latest in the surge of Egyptian squash players, at the age of 17 he has already won his first PSA event just two weeks ago at the Open D’Italia. A presence on the junior scene he won the British Junior u17 open last year and came 3rd in the u19 category last month. He will be hoping to continue his climb up the rankings and will have to come through qualifying as the 8th seed if he wants to add another PSA title to his collection.

On Social Media we will be counting down the days with a short preview of the players.

Farooq Mirza - Celebration of Life

Following the sad death of Farooq Mirza, there will be a 'Celebration of Life' function for Farooq at Waterloo Golf Club on the evening of Saturday 21 January from 7pm.

Farooq had requested a social gathering for all his friends. His family have said that anyone wishing to attend, to say there final farewells and to pay tribute to Farooq is more than welcome.

Farooq Mirza

We are sorry to have to inform you that Farooq died in the early hours of Saturday 3 December. Farooq was diagnosed with Lymphoma in February 2015 and despite undergoing an intensive programme of chemo, stem cell replacement, radiotherapy and being given the all clear early this year the cancer tragically returned.

Farooq started playing squash at the old Waterlooville club over 30 years ago and was a very well known character. He was famous for diving across the court floor and for his laughter! Squash was without doubt an integral part of his life and as well as playing team squash he ran the Summer League for a number of years (in 2015 this was from his hospital bed at times) and was also captain of the Hampshire O60 team. He was 62 years old and leaves a wife, 2 daughters and 4 step sons to whom we extend our condolences.

There will be a Muslim funeral, but we have been told his family will arrange a celebration of his life separately, details of which will be circulated when we have them.

Hants Ladies in Inter-County Premier Division Finals - Report

Ladies IC 2016

The Hampshire Ladies team qualified for Premier division last year by easily winning Division 1. The event was held in Nottingham over two days at the glorious Nottingham Squash Rackets Club, situated within The Park Estate.

The entry consisted of eight counties competing in a monrad draw: Chesire, Warwickshire, Yorkshire, Northumberland, Surrey, Middlesex, Gloustershire and Hampshire. Our team included Sarah Spacey, Catherine Finlayson, Emily Heyes, Fleur Orchard, Bev Mackay and Bev Brockway.

In the first round Hampshire came up against Warwickshire. We lost 4/1 with Fleur, at No4, the only winner for Hampshire. The loss meant we were dropped to the 5/8 playoff, where we met Surrey. Surrey proved to be much stronger than our previous opponents and trounced Hampshire 5/0. On the Sunday we played for 7/8 position against Middlesex. It was a hard fought battle but Middlesex came through 4/1. Both Middlesex and Hampshire are relegated to Division 1.

Playing in Premier division was an eye opener. The teams have incredible depth and most likely it wasn't the strongest team they could field on the day. We enjoyed it immensely and return to Division 1 with our heads held high.

EGM 4 April 2016 - Change of Venue

Please note that due to circumstances beyond our control we have had to change the venue for the meeting.

It will now be held at the meeting facilities at Southampton University’s sports centre at Wide Lane, Eastleigh,  SO50 5PE (opposite the airport):

 http://www.southampton.ac.uk/conference-and-hospitality/meet-with-us/year-round-facilities/wide-lane.page

There is an intercom-controlled access barrier – just say Hampshire Squash – and then you will be directed to the meeting room from reception.

Notice of EGM - Monday 4 April 2016

As discussed at the AGM last July, we are holding an EGM to propose a new set of league rules (clarification/updates/changes).  This is to be held at Southampton University on Monday, 4thApril, starting at 7:30pm.  The meeting will be held in Meeting Room 3 in Building 42, which is where the squash courts are. Parking is free after 5pm and you are advised to use the car park behind buildings 31, 41 and 18.

The agenda is attached, together with the proposed new rules and a map of Soton University campus.  Whilst the proposed rules mainly consolidate the present position, for ease of reference, details of the main changes proposed are as follows:

League Rules – Brief Details of Changes Proposed

Generally, this is just a consolidation/clarification of existing rules/practice.  However, there are some proposed changes and your attention is drawn to the key areas below:

  • Participating Clubs to be represented at the AGM (formerly a £10 fine)
  • No more than two teams from one club to play in any one division
  • Where a club has two teams in the same division, a player may not play for both of them in any one month
  • Dates which may be ruled out by clubs are restricted to 25%
  • Where results are posted late on to LMS, one point will be deducted from the home team’s score for every day by which the result is late
  • Consolidation of the principle that match conflicts should be identified early; where any match is to be rescheduled, the date must be agreed before the date on which the match was originally due to be played.

2015-16 Hampshire Squash County Championships

HSRA Closed winner 2016
Organiser Stuart Summers with men's champion Rob Downer

This year's Tournament saw the biggest entry for well over ten years, boasting 4 main grades and an Over 45 event. The larger pool of players also made each event stronger and more competitive with several of the countries strongest U19, all home grown in Hampshire, competing. Trojans Squash Club hosted the event which saw 11 hours solid play on all 4 courts on both days with a total of 103 matches played. Generous support was given by the top racket brand Pro Kennex and shirts through Neil Dyke and Stitch-a-logo.

The C and D grades were won by James Gibbs (Bounty) and Aled Goddard, two of the 13 Southampton University players. The B grade was won by Callum Greasley (Totton), a keen supporter of the event, who beat Hampshire Chairman Paul Trott (Lee). The O45 event saw the new addition to the age category, Stuart Summers (Bounty and Wykeham), take the title from the seasoned veteran George Kousseff (Winchester) 3-1.

The main event was highly competitive right from the start. All 4 seeds made their way to the semi-finals, both of which had the potential to cause an upset to the seedings. Rob Downer stayed ahead of the rapidly improving youngster Adam Corcoran (both Winchester) to pip him 3-2 in a thrilling match. Top National junior Kyle Finch (Fair Oak) recovered from being what is commonly called ‘bagelled’ (11-0) in the first game to eventually win comfortable 3-1 against an injury-hit Phil Bull (Winchester).

The grand final of Downer, studying at Winchester whilst competing on the PSA circuit, versus Finch, itching to break into the professional scene, had a packed audience. As expected, the wait was worthwhile as Finch snuck the first 12-10. Downer came back hard in the second and his relentless pressure and accurate placement eventually game him the edge in the next three games, each time getting a few points clear – a mountain to climb in the PAR (point-a-rally) scoring system.

Hampshire has one of the strongest County set-ups in the country and probably the best supported County Closed. "This was possibly the best final in the strongest tournament that I have run over the last ten years”, said organiser and County Captain Summers. This was further echoed by Hampshire Chairman Paul Trott who thanked the players for their continued support and also announced the exciting news of an upcoming exhibition match featuring two of the top England players (more details to be announced shortly).
